Steel coffee table base buying guide

Quick answer: choose a base that sits inside the edge of your tabletop, match the finished table height to your sofa seat, and pick a style that suits the shape of your top. Every GJSteelandWood coffee table base is handmade from powder-coated steel in Riga, Latvia, sold without a top, and works with wood, glass, stone or marble.

1. Match the height to your sofa

A coffee table is most comfortable at about the same height as your sofa seat, or slightly lower. Most of our coffee table bases stand around 40 to 45 cm (about 16 to 18 in) before the top is added, so remember to add the thickness of your top. Exact dimensions are listed on each product page.

2. Size the base to your tabletop

The base should sit inside the edge of the top so there is room for knees and feet, while staying wide enough to keep the table stable. Our coffee table bases come in footprints from about 40 cm to 70 cm (about 16 to 28 in). For a low table, TV stand or sideboard, our short steel furniture legs are the simplest option. Does the coffee table base come with a tabletop?

No. We sell the steel base only, so you can pair it with the wood, glass, stone or marble top of your choice and build a coffee table that fits your room exactly.

Can I use a glass or stone top on a steel coffee table base?

Yes. Choose the "without holes" option for glass and stone tops, which are usually fixed with clear adhesive or silicone pads. Choose "with holes" to screw the base directly into a wooden top.

How much weight can a steel coffee table base hold?

Depending on the model, our steel bases carry roughly 60 to 100 kg, which is more than enough for heavy wood slabs, stone and marble tops.

Can you make a coffee table base in a custom size or colour?

Yes. Every base is made to order in our workshop in Riga, Latvia, so we can adjust height and size and powder coat it in any RAL colour. Contact us with your tabletop size.

Can I use steel legs for a TV stand, sideboard or low coffee table?

Can I use a steel coffee table base outdoors?

Our bases are powder coated for indoor use. Many models can be ordered with heavy-duty outdoor priming for covered outdoor spaces; ask us before ordering.
